Lot 2181

1856-S. PCGS graded MS-62 PQ. Lovely golden toning. Almost MS63. Lustrous and attractive Mint State. A very nice example of this popular San Francisco issue, a piece that has spent its career on land and thus is different from some of the "seawater Uncirculated" pieces that have been offered over the years and have been widely cited in the literature.

Despite a fairly sizable mintage of this date (1,189,750 pieces), in select MS62 or finer grades its reputation as a rarity is irrefutably accurate. We imagine serious bidding activity will be seen when this beautiful early branch mint double eagle crosses the auction block (PCGS # 8919) Estimated Value $8,000 - 9,000

Ex: HW Bass Jr. Collection.

Realized $12,075
