Lot 1900

1900 Lafayette Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Attractively toned. A gorgeous gem example! Only 36,026 struck. Without doubt the most visually stunning feature of this Lafayette Dollar is its soft, frosted mint luster. Full swirling luster on both sides, in fact. Of course, collectors seeing the photos understand this coin is nicely struck for the date as well, best of all entirely so. Certainly a coin that gets proper mention where completeness of design across the board in the Commemorative Silver series is almost impossible to attain.

The heads of Washington and Lafayette appear jugate -- here actually cheek to cheek, in a singularly appropriate testimony not only to their joint role in the Revolution but to their relationship in life. "The childless Washington and the then extremely handsome young Lafayette were closer than brothers throughout the war," explains Breen in his book on Commemorative coinage. "It might have been even more appropriate to portray them as they appeared then, rather than decades later, but possibly no engraved portrait of Lafayette of that time was available to go with those of Washington by Pierre Eugene du Simitiere."

Lafayette’s pose on the statue, as depicted on the coin, was meant to represent him in triumphal procession rather than charging against the enemy -- note the sheathed sword serving as a standard rather than brandished unsheathed as a weapon (PCGS # 9222) Estimated Value $7,000 - 8,000

Ex Troy Wiseman Collection.
