Lot 1254

1853. PCGS graded MS-66. CAC Approved. Housed in an Old Green Holder. A lustrous example of this high mintage date, lightly toned and complete and unabraded, the satin luster exceeds most others in this condition, plus excellent silver color. The strike is strong, with clear definition to the high points. This includes full outline on the central shield and full "chief" and vertical stripes.

The silver three-cent pieces of 1851-53 were struck in a composition of .750 silver and .250 copper. In 1854, and throughout the remaining years of the series, the coins were produced from a composition of .900 silver and .100 copper, thus finally measuring up to all the other silver denominations of the era. Pop 57; 7 finer, 1 in 66+, 5 in 67, 1 in 67+. (PCGS # 3667) Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,400

Realized $3,105
