Lot 562

1848 N-36 R5- PCGS graded MS62 Brown. Choice glossy steel brown and light chocolate. Essentially flawless, but it is difficult to assign a higher grade due to the blunted details on the portrait caused by improper die preparation. Finding an identifying mark is a challenge, so a tiny, very thin nick on the truncation above the first 8 will have to suffice for this purpose. LDS, die state b. The fields are smooth and slightly reflective thanks to a fresh die polishing that removed the earlier vertical die line under the first 8. A great example of this odd-looking die variety. Our grade is MS60. CC#1 for the variety, the only mint state example known. Certainly the most significant late date cent in the Carvin Goodridge collection. The attribution and Carvin Goodridge provenance are shown on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; the only MS graded of the variety.
Estimated Value $500-UP.
Ex an unrecorded bourse dealer at the Southington, CT, coin show 1/2/1983-Carvin Goodridge collection.

Realized $6,038
