Lot 4490

Great Britain. Seville oval countermarked Dollar, ND (1797). S.3765A; ESC-135; KM-640. George III. Obverse: Small oval counterstamp of the head of George III over the portrait of Charles IV of Spain. Reverse: Crowned shield of arms with 2 pillars. Seville mint. The Seville mint dollar is rarely seen counterstamped as an Emergency Issue Dollar (current for 4 shillings and 9 pence) in early 19th century Britain. Probably one encounters 20-30 Mexico mint or Lima mint 8 Reales or dollars countermarked this way for every one struck at Seville. Mint state and pleasantly toned. A truly rare item. NGC graded AU-55.
Estimated Value $4,800 - 5,500.
