Lot 4448

Great Britain. Proof Copper Halfpenny, 1729. S.3717; Peck-832. George II. A beautiful mid-chocolate coloured Proof from the first year of this monarch's copper coinage. Very sharply struck and with the usual edge peculiarities associated with this issue. Practically blemish free, this compares well with the Terner specimen. NGC graded Proof 63 Brown.

Peck tells us that the coining of copper was resumed by George II under a warrant dated 21 July 1729, and signed by Queen Caroline in the king's absence. Croker continued as chief engraver until his death in March 1741. This Proof halfpenny was therefore made soon after late July 1729, as a low-mintage example of the engraver's art. It is much more finely executed than the more crudely produced currency examples of the same year.
Estimated Value $1,400 - 1,600.
