Great Britain. Noble, ND. S.1803; Fr-112. Henry VI, 1422-1461. First reign annulet issue (1422-1427). Calais mint. Obverse: King standing in ship facing, holding sword and shield. Flag at stern denotes Calais mint. Reverse: Floriated cross with lis at ends, h in center. Mint state with a sharp cameo portrait and an abundance of original luster. PCGS graded MS-62.
* This superb coin was minted early in King Henry VI's reign. Born in December 1421 at Windsor Castle, Henry was King of England from 1422-1461 and again from 1470-1471, and disputed King of France 1422-1453.
Having become king as a baby, Henry's realm was governed by regents until he came of age in 1437. He was peaceful and pious and favored the factions who wanted peace with France, but others were happy to continue the Hundred Years War. Soon, Joan of Arc's military victories and influence over the monarchy fuelled France's resurrection and there was an eventual five year truce followed by a disastrous resumption of the war and the English loss of Normandy.
Henry was not suited for the dynastic Wars of the Roses which began later in his turbulent reign, and the court intrigue and machinations of the time left him cold. He became a political pawn and was probably eventually murdered in 1471. A good man, but unsuited for the job of King.
