Great Britain. Half Noble, ND. Fr-96; S.1506. Edward III, 1327-1377. Treaty period (1361-1369). Obverse. King standing in ship facing, holding sword and shield, saltire before EDWARD. Reverse: Floriated cross, mint mark cross potent. Good portrait, nice original surfaces, and great detail. Catalogue price is £1500 British Pounds in VF, no price given for higher grades. NGC graded MS-61.

The gold Noble, Half Noble and Quarter Nobles of Edward III represented the first successful attempt to introduce gold coinage on a serious scale into England. The Noble was valued at 6 shillings and 8 pence, i.e. 80 pence, or one third of a pound. When the Treaty of Bretigny was signed in 1360 with King John (the Good) of France, Edward's title to the Kingdom of France was omitted from the coinage, but it was resumed again in 1369. The Treaty did not lead to lasting peace (for a while Edward III renounced his claims on the French throne) but it gave a 9 year respite from the Hundred Years War. After the Treaty with France which secured England's cross-channel base at Calais, a mint was opened there for the production of English gold and silver coinage.
Estimated Value $3,400 - 3,800.
