Lot 382

1818 N-7 R1 Double Struck G4. The obverse is slightly better, the reverse a bit weaker. Glossy chocolate and steel brown. No roughness, just a few minor marks. Double struck. The first strike was normal and centered on the planchet, but it failed to eject before a new blank planchet was inserted into the coining chamber and another strike occurred. The reverse was struck a second time by the reverse die but the coin was rotated about 20 degrees before the second impression. F AM from the first strike shows at AME of the second (the dominant) strike. The obverse was pressed against a 10-15% off center blank planchet during the second strike creating an off-center obverse brockage on that planchet while leaving a clear impression of the blank planchet on the obverse of this cent. Another obvious mint error in this extensive collection.
Estimated Value $100-UP.
Ex Carvin Goodridge collection.
