Nero, AD 54-68. Gold Aureus (7.29g). Mint of Rome, AD 65. Laureate head of Nero facing right. Reverse: Closed door of the Temple of Janus (Ianus Geminus). RIC 50 &58; BMCRE 64; Calico 409. Some scattered marks on both sides. Toned. Very Fine.

On the rare occasions when Rome was not at war, the doors of the "Twin Janus" were closed as shown here. This was an event in which Nero commemorated extensively on his coinage of AD 65-67.
