Seleucid Coins of Ancient Israel. Demetrios II Nikator, 1st reign, 145-140 BCE. Silver Tetradrachm (16.39g). Minted at Antioch 145/4 BCE. Diademed head of Demetrius II facing right; laurel wreath borders. Reverse: Apollo seated left on omphalos, date HΞP (year 168) in exergue. BMC 8 var; Houghton 217 var. Wonderful high relief portrait. Medium grey toning. Extremely Fine.

Demetrius II made a peace treaty with the Jews when he gained the Syrian throne. (1 Maccabbes 11:32-37). This was soon broken and it was under Simon Maccabeus that the Jews achieved their independence. (1 Maccabees 13:35-42).
