Lot 3474

Phoenicia, Sidon. King Tennes, 354-348 B.C. Silver Double Shekel (25.76g) Regnal Year 3. War galley traveling left; beneath, four lines of waves. Reverse: Bearded deity (or King of Persia) in horsedrawn cart driven slowly left by charioteer; cart followed by King of Sidon wearing crown and carrying animal-headed sceptre. SGC 5941; cf. Betlyon (ANSMN 21) #31. Well struck and well centered. Choice Very Fine.

A Biblical Reference Coin. In Genesis 10:19 Sidon is referred to as the border of Canaan, and in Joshua 11:8 it is described as Greater Sidon. In I Kings 16:31 the reference of Ahab is made. As king of Israel, he married Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal and became king of the Sidonians. It was Ahab who …"did more to provoke the Lord God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before him." Then in II Kings 9:33 reference is made of Jezebel and her blood thirsty campaign to wipe out Israel's religion and replace it with the Canaanite's.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,300.
