1881 Trade Dollar. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. A brilliant, basically untoned gem with excellent cameo contrast. Popular Proof only date. A visually arresting, indeed a "classy" coin with bright reflective surfaces on the obverse and reverse, emboldened by the cameo contrasting devices. Deeply mirrored with lustrous mirror-like accents. Some dates in the Proof-only period that spanned 1878 to 1883 are weakly struck on the stars and head. Walter Breen suggested that a flat head and flat stars are the norm for this issue, however, the present example is truly an exception. All details are sharp.
Apparently the short lived boom for Proof trade dollars that occurred in 1879 and 1880 was over, as the mintage of this 1881 dropped to 960 coins, similar to several other Proof issues earlier in this series. Pop 19; 32 finer .
