Lot 2693

1912-S Liberty Nickel. PCGS graded MS-65. A well struck gem with smooth spot free surfaces and delicately toned. Rare key date coin. A lovely example, lustrous with light golden and gray toning, of this famous low-mintage issue. Only 238,000 were minted. As is true of every other 1912-S nickel we have seen, there is some slight upraising in the left obverse field and some lightness of strike at the hair at center. As all are this way, this can be considered as a standard feature.

The low mintage stands like a beacon in the Liberty Head nickel series, being the lowest by far of any variety from 1883 through 1912. Further, this represents the first nickel five-cent piece struck at the San Francisco Mint and the only one of this design. Pop 181; 29 finer, 19 in 65+, 10 in 66 (PCGS # 3875) .
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000.
