Lot 2622

1872 Two Cents. PCGS graded MS-64 Red. In a 1st generation holder. Scarcer issue as only 65,000 struck. The low population indicates how rare these are. Satiny matte surfaces explode with intense color of varying shades that red copper generates. Judged from an aesthetic standpoint, the coin is also possessed of a much finer strike than is typically found for a late-date Two-cent piece, with full firm detail on motto, shield lines and stripes, and the reverse wreath. This is another simple, yet masterful coin designed by the Mint’s venerable engraver, James B. Longacre who was employed at the Philadelphia facility from 1844 until his death in 1869. Pop 9; 6 in 65 RD, 1 in 65+ RD, 3 in 66 RD.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.
