Lot 2615

1866 Two Cents. PCGS graded MS-65 Red. Well struck with faded mint red. This is an immaculate, unhairlined, and original Gem Mint State. The surfaces have an warm mellow quality, combining original faded orange-red with deep cherry-red. Lustrous on both sides, the surfaces show no carbon while the devices are crisply delineated, meaning bold. Very elusive as such and sure to be of keen interest to knowledgeable collectors of Two-cent coinage. Pop 45; 9 finer, 2 in 65+, 7 in 66 (PCGS # 3590) .

Historic Note: The year 1866: The first big cattle drive took place this year as "cow-boys" as they were called drove 260,000 head from Texas to the meat packing plants of Kansas, Missouri, and Iowa. In the next 20 years, between 4 and 8 million cattle were driven north. This practice was hotly opposed by Indians and farmers who lived en route, and many battles took place. (After Philip Armour opened his meat packing plant in Chicago after the Civil War, cattle could be sold to northern markets for as much as $40 per head, making it potentially profitable for cattle, particularly from Texas, to be herded long distances to market.).
Estimated Value $2,500 - 2,600.
The Coltrin Family Collection.

Realized $2,013
