Lot 244

1795 S-76b R1 Plain Edge Flip-Over Double Strike VG8. Sharpness EF40 but corroded, lightly on the obverse and moderately on the reverse. Raised greenish verdigris shows on both sides, although at least half the planchet is reasonably smooth and void of any verdigris. No notable contact marks. EDS, prior to any swelling in the obverse fields. This piece was struck two times and flipped over between those strikes. The initial impression was slightly off center to K-5 while the second was better centered on the planchet. OF AMERICA shows clearly along the right side of the obverse while ERTY shows above ES-OF and the bust tip is visible at RI in AMERICA. The two impressions squeezed the planchet sufficiently to increase its diameter to an unusually large 30.5 millimeters. An impressive mint error with sharp details, but the verdigris is a problem.
Estimated Value $250-UP.
Ex Superior 2/16/1976:353-Carvin Goodridge collection (lot ticket included).
