Lot 1647

1861-S $10 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-50 PQ. Only 15,500 minted. A scarce date in high grades. Pop 9; 13 finer, 5 in 53, 6 in 55, 2 in 58. No Mint State examples graded by PCGS. The 1861-S $20 gold piece is easily found in various grades. The 1861-S $10 is elusive in the extreme, and this is one of the finer pieces we have had the pleasure to offer in a long while. We emphasize that production of gold coins at the San Francisco Mint during the war between the North and South was almost primarily double eagles, with only a limited press run of smaller denomination coins. So scarce are these, even the S.S. Republic treasure failed to substantially increase the known population, with just two examples recovered. This example is lustrous with a faint hairline on Liberty's neck and some minor scuffs in the field below the right wing, all perfectly normal for an early gold rarity such as this (PCGS # 8634) .
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,400.

Realized $10,063
