1851-D $5 Liberty. NGC graded EF-40. Mostly untoned, another in a string of interesting and highly prized D and C mint gold coins from this extensive consignment. Dahlonega, Georgia was opened in 1838 to strike gold coins exclusively. The mint ceased operations when the break came between the Union and the Confederate States of America in 1861. It never reopened (although the Southern-held New Orleans mint did open for business after a 30-year hiatus) (PCGS # 8248) .
