Lot 1492

1804 $5 Small 8/Large 8 ANACS graded AU Details Net EF45. . BD-7, Breen-6442. Cleaned. Untoned. Light hairlines but choice surfaces otherwise, free of marks, devoid of rim blemishes, and actually very nice overall. If you were expecting the design left by the dies to be deficient in robustness due to the early period in US history, take heart, since this is an exceptional 1804 Half Eagle in terms of its bold detail and not the usual run-of-the-mill strike on, say, the 1806 or 1807 issues which are notorious. No, it is, indeed, very bold with excellent detail in E PLURIBUS UNUM and scroll, full neck and breast feathers (very uncommon on these), and impressive hair waves and stars on the obverse. The color is attractive, as well, since it has begun to tone naturally after having been cleaned, possibly many years ago. Estimated only 100 to 150 known of BD-7.
Estimated Value $2,400 - 2,500.

Realized $6,038
