Lot 1477

1855 $3 Gold. PCGS graded AU-58. Mostly untoned and a very pleasant offering with its beaming luster over both sides. Second year of issue. Mintage declined from 1854 after few orders came in for the denomination from gold coin and bullion depositors. In days when the US Mints conducted free coinage of gold and silver (with only a modest seignorage charge for the service), depositors indicated which denominations they wanted their deposits in. Deposits could be in the form of foreign coins or bullion in various stages of rawness, from granules to home made bars to standard-issue bars from various private refiners. The $3 denomination being an odd-man-out, so to speak, it drew little attention in the years it was available from the Mints (1854-89) (PCGS # 7972) .
Estimated Value $1,700 - 1,800.
The Arden Collection.

Realized $2,185
