Lot 1361

1862 $1 Gold Indian. NGC graded MS-65. Star CAC Approved. A well struck glittering golden example featuring the Type 3, Large "Indian Head" design -- more properly, Liberty with decorative headdress. Leading into the Civil War, which broke out in April 1861, bullion depositors at the Philadelphia Mint asked for and received increased coinage of Gold Dollars and other denominations. This continued into 1862 before local hoarding of coins and bullion virtually dried up the demand for small gold coins. $20 gold pieces continued to be struck, albeit in reduced quantities throughout the war. A handsome Gem Mint State example! Pop 2; 58 finer (PCGS # 7560) .
Estimated Value $1,900 - 2,000.
The Arden Collection.

Realized $3,220
