Lot 536

1848 N-12 R1. NGC graded MS-64 Red & Brown. Highly lustrous bluish steel and chocolate with 15% of the mint color showing on the obverse and 85% of the bright original mint red remaining on the reverse. The obverse is a gem, virtually flawless. The reverse would rate a similar grade but there are numerous small specks of dark toning scattered about, mostly inside the wreath. None of these specks is significant in its own right, but there are too many to ignore. Still a very impressive cent. M-LDS, die state b late. The die lines over ERIC seen in the earlier states are very weak, nearly gone. Our grade is MS63+. Tied for CC#4 honors in the Grellman census. The attribution is noted on the NGC label.
Estimated Value $800-UP.
