Lot 4515

Elagabalus, AD 218-222. Gold Aureus (6.28g) minted at Rome, AD 218. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Elagabalus right. Reverse: Roma enthroned left, holding Victoria (Victory) in the palm of her outstretched right hand and scepter in the left; shield leaning against throne. RIC 5; Calicó 3021. Bold strike offering an interesting boyish depiction of Antoninus called "Elagabalus" that much belies the nature of this degenerate former high-priest of the Syrian sun-god, who may have been the most bizarre of Rome's emperors. This is a lovely example, struck in high relief with nice sharp devices and all delicately toned. Extremely Fine.
Estimated Value $8,000 - 9,000.

Realized $17,250
