Septimius Severus, AD 193-211. The Bosporan Kingdom. Sauromates II, ca. AD 172-211. Electrum Stater (7.54 g) struck AD 198/199. BACIΛEWC CAVPOMATOV. Diademed and draped head of Sauromates II right. Reverse: Laureate head of Septimius Severus right; pellet before; beneath E9V (year 495 = AD 198/9). Sear (Greek Imperial Coins) 5476; BMC 9. Faint signs of burnishing in the obverse fields. Both portraits nice and bold. About Extremely Fine.

Following the defeat by Pompey, the Pontic Kingdom of Mithradates VI was split up into separate dynasties of Pontus and Bosporus. In AD 64 Nero annexed Pontus, bringing that dynasty to an end. Bosporus however, remained semi-independent under a line of kings, all the way until the 4th Century AD.
