Lot 4423

Galba, AD 68-69. Orichalcum Sestertius (26.45g) minted at Rome, June-August AD 68. Laureate head of Galba right. Reverse: Victoria (Victory) alighting left, holding palladium (Minerva as goddess of war) in one hand and palm frond in the other; in fields right and left, S C. RIC 270; ACG 241. Lovely light green patina with burgundy hues. Well-detailed portrait. A marvelous Galba sestertius. Extremely Fine.

After Nero was condemned to death on June 9th and took his own life, the Senate hailed Galba, who was in Spain, as emperor. This sestertius was struck while Galba and Otho were marching from Taracco to Rome, after Galba's recognition as princeps by the Senate in June-August AD 68. A deputation of the Senate and praetorian guards met Galba in early July to confirm his imperial status. Galba arrived in Rome in October to begin his reign, which would prove to be barely three months before he was slaughtered by praetorian guards loyal to Otho on January 15, AD 69.
Estimated Value $12,000 - 15,000.
