Lot 4306

Macedonian Kingdom. Alexander III, the Great, 336-323 BC. Gold Stater (8.6g), uncertain Greek mint, struck ca. 310-275. Head of Athena right wearing a crested Attic helmet adorned with a coiled serpent. Reverse: Nike standing left, holding a wreath before her and stylis in left hand; ant in left field, star lower left. Price 831; Müller 179. Plenty of luster still evident. Nearly Extremely Fine.

The ant is very rare as a symbol on Macedonian coins, and Greek in general, and this with a combination of a star, certainly is of special significance.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.
The Hunter Collection.

Realized $2,415
