Sicily, Syrakuse. Silver Tetradrachm (17.14g) struck ca. 490-485 BC. Dies by the"Master of the Large Arethusa Heads." Charioteer walking slow quadriga left; Nike (Victory) flying right above to crown the charioteer. Reverse: Head of Arethusa right, with high cheekbone, large nose and rounded chin, wearing a tainia and necklace; her hair finely beaded around face, cross-hatched on back of head and behind her neck, with two fine, wavy locks falling down neck behind ear; truncation defined with a double line - the upper solid, the lower dotted; four dolphins around. Boehringer 34 (V25/R18); Rizzo pl. xxxiv, 7 (same dies), Kraay-Hirmir 74 (same dies); H. Scharmer, "Die Meister der spatarchaischen Arethusakopfe," AK 10 (1967), pp. 94-95, pl. 28, 1 (same reverse die). Trivial earthen deposits. Soft gray toning and deeply struck on a broad flan. An attractive example of the late archaic style. Very Rare. Choice Very Fine.
