Lucania, Metapontum / Metapontion. Silver Stater (7.8g) struck ca. 340-330 BC. Head of bearded Leukippos right wearing a Corinthian helmet; dog seated left behind, raising his forepaw. Reverse: META. Seven-grain barley ear with leaf to right; bird with open wings atop leaf; AMI below. SNG ANS 443, HN Italy 1576. Bold profile of Leukippos. Light antique toning. Choice Very Fine.

The handsome bearded head adorning the obverse of this fourth century Metapontine stater is that of Leukippos. Following its destruction by the Samnites, Metapontion was recolonized from Sybaris early in the seventh century BC by settlers under the leadership of Leukippos, who was afterwards revered as the city's founder.
