Lot 303

1800/798 S-191 R3 Style I Hair with Overdate 800 over 798 VF30. Sharpness EF45 but there is a small area of fine roughness in the field before the eye. The remainder of the planchet is smooth, void of any trace of roughness or verdigris. Both sides display some small nicks, none distracting but more than you expect for a cent with so little wear. Glossy bluish steel and chocolate brown. MDS, Breen state IV. The obverse displays clear die clashmarks and the reverse is starting to fail within the wreath and at the fraction. The overdate is visible on all 3 digits (800 over 798). An imperfect but very sharp example of this popular overdate variety. Noyes photo #31980.
Estimated Value $4,000-UP.
Ex Larry Whitlow-R. S. Brown, Jr., Superior 9/30/1986:269-Dave Liljestrand-Denis Loring-Tom Reynolds.

Realized $4,140
