1799/8 S-188 R4 Overdate 9 over 8 PCGS Genuine, Good Details, Environmental Damage. Sharpness near VG7 but covered with fine to moderate roughness. There are traces of shallow verdigris in protected areas and some faint hairline scratches that are effectively lost in the roughness. The date and legends are weakened by the roughness but they remain easily readable. Unfortunately evidence of the 9 over 8 overdate feature is lost in the roughness. Dark steel and olive. EDS, prior to any die cracks on the obverse. The PCGS label does not identify this as the S-188 overdate variety, only as a genuine 1799. However, it is certainly the overdate variety as the positioning of the date numerals is diagnostic.
