Lot 288

1798 S-165 R4 Large 8, Style II Hair VF20+. Ten points sharper but there are a couple light, old scratches on the obverse, including one from the field before the chin to the rim before the neck and another from the bottom of the neck to the rim off the bust tip. The only other contact marks of any significance is a light rim bruise at the U in UNITED. The planchet is smooth except for a bit of microscopic roughness below the portrait and in the field left of the lowest curls. Glossy chocolate brown and light olive with a hint of reddish chocolate tone in the slightly roughened area around the date and lowest curl. MDS, Breen state II, with clear die clashmarks on both sides but no die cracks. A new discovery not in the Noyes database but clearly among the finest known of this tough variety, perhaps CC# 5 or 6 in a comparison with photos of the best examples.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.

Realized $3,680
