Lot 284

1798 S-156 R5+ Small 8, Style I Hair, Reverse of 1796 Basal State-1+. The obverse is Fair-2 while the reverse is nearly slick. The details on the obverse are consistent with a G4 grade, but the planchet is lightly corroded. Dark olive brown and steel. The date is strong and LIBERTY is weak but mostly readable, but the reverse is considerably weaker with only traces of the lower half of the wreath visible (especially the wreath under UNITED). Fortunately there is enough detail to identify the die variety. EDS, Breen state I, before the obverse die cracked. A very tough variety in any grade.
Estimated Value $500-UP.

Realized $483
