Lot 273

1797 NC-3 R6- Fair-2. Sharpness VG7 but dull from microscopic roughness. No verdigris, but this cent was abused, especially on the rims where you can see dents and flattening. Small nicks and moderate dents are scattered elsewhere over the obverse, and the reverse suffers from a half dozen dull dents. Slightly glossy dark chocolate and olive mixed with some medium chocolate. EDS, Breen state I, before the die crack through TES. Not an especially attractive cent, of course, but the date is clear and the legends are nearly complete in spite of the dents. The finest known of this very rare variety is a scudzy net VG10 that resides in the ANS Collection, and most of the known examples are in low grade. Waiting for a really nice one may not be a reasonable option.
Estimated Value $350-UP.
