Lot 271

1797 S-140 R1 AG3. Several points sharper in many areas but the obverse is moderately corroded with specks of verdigris while the reverse shows only minor roughness. A dull rim nick left of the L in LIBERTY and a small rim bruise at the F in OF are the notable contact marks. Slightly glossy dark olive and chocolate mixed with some reddish chocolate on the obverse. Not an especially attractive cent, but it has redeeming qualities. This piece was struck at least 3 times, and a couple of those impressions were significantly off center. Evidence of the multiple strikes shows on both sides but it is clearest on the reverse. In the midst of all the confusion, the date and most of the legends remain visible. Worth a close look.
Estimated Value $300-UP.
