1794 S-23 R4+ PCGS "Genuine, AU Details, Altered Surfaces". Glossy light olive brown and steel with darker reddish brown toning in protected areas, possibly retoned long ago. There is a rim bruise under the lowest curl, a faint vertical hairline scratch in the right obverse field, a dull nick left of O in OF, and an obvious stain of reddish olive toning mixed with shallow crud at ERI. Otherwise the planchet and surfaces are reasonably nice. LDS, Breen state V. The obverse die cracks are strong. Tied for CC#7 in both census lists. Bland says EF40 net VF30 while Noyes says VF35 net VF20, his photo #31368. Our grade is VF35 net VF25, the midpoint between the Bland and Noyes grades. Comes with a long, distinguished provenance. The attribution and Paul Gerrie provenance are shown on the PCGS label.
Estimated Value $7,500-UP.
