Chamberlain, Arthur Neville (1869-1940) Prime Minister of the UK (May 1937-May 1940). In an attempt to pacify Hitler and avoid further German aggression, he signed the Munich Accord in 1938, which conceded the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia to Germany, telling the British people, "I believe it is peace for our time." Typed Letter Signed ("N. Chamberlain"), one page, on stationery headed "Westbourne. Edgbaston. Birmingham," 9 x 7", May 31,1929. To an American man in Washington, D.C. who collected letters from English statesmen. Accompanied by an engraved card sent as Prime Minister from 10, Downing Street, Christmas 1938, with thanks for greetings and good wishes; with transmittal envelope.
