Lot 3113

Pontic Kingdom. Mithradates VI, 120-63 BC. Gold Stater (8.27 g) minted in the type of Lysimachos, c. 88-86 BC at Tomis. Head right of the deified Alexander the Great wearing the horn of Ammon above ear. Reverse: Athena Nikephoros enthroned left; mintmark on throne; beneath, trident. SNG Cop 1093.Typical die rusting on reverse. NGC notes possible "Celtic" issue. NGC graded Mint State; Strike 4/5; Surface 4/5.

Although already an imitation of the Lysimachian type, this very rare gold stater further shows elements of Danubian provenance. Notice the graceful "S" swirls in the hair and other parts of the design, in particular at the forehead, top back of the head and the elaboration of the diadem tie. It is apparent that the celator had a great deal of pride and enjoyment in amplifying this readily accepted trade coin. It is the only example this cataloguer has seen of this style.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,200.

Realized $1,783
