1879. NGC graded Proof 64 Ultra Cameo. A lovely untoned example. An impressive, well contrasted specimen with glittering fields set against heavily frosted devices. A hardly detectable, paper-thin blemish by the 9 of the date has no ill-effect on the coin's considerable eye appeal and is all that keeps this elusive early Proof from Gem Proof 65 status. The 1879 gold dollar is a very rare coin as a Proof and not a date to be confused with the much more plentiful Proofs struck from 1881 to 1889 in the series. Only 30 pieces were produced and, since most business strikes display full Prooflike brilliance, the number of Proof 1879 gold dollars available has been exaggerated for many years. In reality, their numbers may be as few as a dozen coins. Pop 1; 2 finer, 1 in 65 and 1 in 66 Star .
