Lot 1654

Chilton, WI - The Shawanaw Bank $2 Aug. 1, 1860. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent. An exceedingly scarce circulated note issued from the second of the bank's three locations. One and two dollar denominations were issued at the Chilton location which was open from 1858 until it moved to Sheboygan in 1863. Although Proofs are sometimes available, circulated notes are an entirely different story. The central vignette is one of at least two varieties of "Finding the Red Ear" that are found on Obsoletes. The signers of this $2 were Cashier Caleb G. Sprague and President John O. Thayer. The green and black note has a very pleasing appearance overall, with edge splits and damage along with minor mounting damage on the back resulting in the Apparent grade. A very difficult note to assign a value to given its extreme scarcity, so we have chosen a very conservative estimate.
Estimated Value $500 - 800.

Realized $518
