Lot 1367

1807. . O-105, R-1. PCGS graded MS-62. Attractive golden toning. A velvety smooth and lustrous early Capped Bust, Large Eagle half dollar with a gradation of faint champagne on both sides. The underlying frost is shimmering white. The contact from the dies is virtually complete, although perhaps a hint of weakness is seen at the lovelock curl on Liberty’s neck. Stars at left complete; those on the right less so but still well formed for the most part. Turning next to the reverse, here too the detail is much better than on most 1807-dated halves. There is a complete E PLURIBUS UNUM on the scroll. Some of the wing feathers and breast detail near the shield is flat. A design problem since this area of the reverse lies opposite some of the highest relief on the obverse. The luster on both sides flows nicely outward producing the typical cartwheel sheen seen on the better preserved Mint States of the Type. Best of all, marks are nearly absent on this handsome offering!

The die state is early enough so that the coin falls under O-105 rather than the "advanced state". There are, however, extensive die breaks through STATES OF (which later expanded into a near collapse of the die, shorting die-life) (PCGS # 6079) .
Estimated Value $8,000 - 8,500.
