August Bechtler 1 DOLLAR CAROLINA, 27 gr. 21 carats. NGC graded MS-62. Here is a beautiful example of this scarce coin, the surfaces show moderate handling ticks visible with a glass, but nothing heavy or deep. Near the devices, the coin retains its full mint freshness, and appears lightly prooflike near the lettering and devices. It is hard to imagine how such a coin survived in Mint State condition all these years, demand for gold coinage was high, and most were spent countless times to support merchants in transactions. This is reflected in the NGC Population Report, which notes most of the coins submitted of this variety are circulated, only 11 have been graded as MS-62 by that service, with 1 graded higher. It is noteworthy that virtually all Mint State coins grade either MS-61 or 62, with a single coin graded MS-63. Therefore, don't wait for a gem to pop out of the wordwork, they probably don't exist. The design elements allowed for numerous tick marks to appear in the fields, as there were few devices to protect the surfaces of the fields. For this reason, and because there were virtually no collectors alive at the time, preservation was a matter of chance, and careful preservation simply was not an option, as reflected in the grading numbers. Thus, here we offer one of the finest August Bechtler $1 pieces, a coin worthy of a top territorial collection.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.

Realized $3,623
