(1861) J.J. Conway & Co. $5 Gold. No 5 on reverse. The obverse of the bar at the top shows a balance scale which is surrounded by the words: THORNE MINING AND REFINING CO. ARIZONA. Below the stamp the bar reads: MONETARY VALUE/ 3 DOLS 56 CTS/ CONTAINS 2.74 OZS TROY/ GOLD .000 FINE/ SILVER .9996 / SERIAL NO. 297. The reverse and sides of the bar are blank. A few minor handling marks are visible on the surfaces, and the bar has dark silver toning. These private issue bars have generated huge controversies over the decades, and it appears that significant research is being done on the companies that produced bars and we believe these controversies will soon be laid to rest. Always popular with collectors, and certain to see spirited bidding. This bar grades Very Fine.
