Lot 1105

TIED FOR THE FINEST KNOWN 1908-S. PCGS graded MS-68. Superb! There is only one type issued by San Francisco in 1908, all of them have the motto IN GOD WE TRUST in the field left of the eagle. As a date, 1908-S is considered rare, only 59,850 were struck. Gems are extremely rare, to find any eagle in this state of preservation is nearly impossible, let alone a rare date. PCGS in their Population Report shows only 3 graded in MS-68. NGC has graded only a single coin this high.
A glance will tell all, the surfaces are satiny smooth, a glass is needed to find the infinitesimal tick marks hidden on the eagle's feathers. We were able to trace this exact coin by a tiny toning spot on the rim above the eagle's tail to a 1992 Superior Galleries sale where it realized $60,500 then. To our knowledge, this coin has been off the market since that time. This is absolutely the freshest, most original and most perfect eagle we've ever had the pleasure to offer, be sure to avail yourself of the opportunity to purchase this unique rarity, for it may not be offered again for decades.
Estimated Value $50,000-UP.
From Superior Galleries sale, May 1992, lot 2906.
