1843 N-4 R1 Obverse of 1842, Reverse of 1844 MS63. Choice, highly lustrous dark bluish steel and chocolate with a couple faint peeps of faded mint color on the reverse. Attractive satiny mint frost covers the planchet offering outstanding eye appeal for the grade. Virtually flawless. A tiny struck-through line (caused by a piece of thread or wire from die cleaning materials) shows near the dentils at star 3, and there is a tiny diagonal nick close over star 5. M-LDS, die state c (Newcomb's old #13). Die polishing has removed the lump under the 1 and has severely weakened the points up from the top of N in ONE. The thin rim cud under 184 is barely visible due to the narrow rim. A very nice example of this popular transitional "Redbook" variety. Now housed in a PCGS MS65 BN holder. (PCGS # 403922).
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.
Ex John MacDonald-Denis Loring 12/98-R. S. Brown, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 6/2/2002:123, The Northwest Collection.
