Lot 2136

1902. PCGS graded MS-63 PQ. Low mintage date. Only 31,140 produced. Well struck with nice light golden toning.

There are three better date double eagles from the Philadelphia Mint from the early 20th century, the 1902, 1905 and 1906. Of these three, the 1902 and 1905 are the scarcest. A small mintage of 31,140 was all that was produced in 1902 and survivors rarely make it past the MS63 grade. We feel certain that bidding will be intense for this original, choice and undervalued double eagle scarcity

This satiny example does not have the "washed out" appearance seen on the few competing 1902 Double Eagles. Were you to block out the date, you might easily assume this is a 1904 by its swirling luster and serene appearance. We should also point out that the devices are well struck overall with minimal abrasions present, a small mark at the eye, a little depression near the chin. The reverse is equally outstanding for such a rare bird, no pun intended. Only the collector of substance will be able to afford this coin. But it is every bit the masterpiece within its series, a landmark offering, shall we say? Pop 66; 10 finer, 1 in 63+, 8 in 64, 1 in 66 (PCGS # 9041) .
Estimated Value $11,000 - 12,000.
