Lot 21

1825 N-7 R3 MS63+. Repunched 5. Choice lustrous bluish steel brown with attractive satiny mint frost covering the surfaces. Peeps of mint color remain on the obverse while at least 10% of the reverse shows original red color. Just a few trivial marks, including a small spot of darker toning in the field under star 6, a dull and barely visible contact mark on the tip of the chin, and a tick in the center of the line below CENT. Sharply struck showing full radial lines in all the stars. A choice cent, very close to MS64. MDS with a die crack from the curl at star 13 down to the dentils just right of the date and a rim cud break at star 11 extending halfway up to star 10. The repunching on the 5 remains sharp. This is the Newcomb plate coin for the variety. Called MS65 choice and finest known by a full 5 points in the Noyes census, his photo #21287. Bland says MS60+ and CC#1. Both agree this is the only mint state example outside the ANS Museum. A very important cent that comes with an impressive provenance. Removed from a PCGS slab graded MS65BN (PCGS label included, and it shows the attribution and Naftzger provenance). Now housed in a PCGS MS65 BN holder. (PCGS # 36799).
Estimated Value $6,000-UP.
