Lot 1916

1853-C. NGC graded MS-62. A fully lustrorus untoned example. Only 11,515 minted. The strike on both sides of this handsome little coin is more characteristic of the P-mint issue than that usually seen weaker Mint State 1853-C specimens offered for sale. There is excellent detail on the obverse at Liberty's coronet, brow and hair bun while on the reverse the date and the second L in DOLLAR are typically weak. There are also a few isolated areas of striking incompleteness around the borders. That said, we stress that this coin is truly above par for the issue in the realm of surface preservation. The fields are satin-like to frosty--a feature that suggests careful handling since the day it reached its first owner, be he tinker, tailor, soldier, or banker. A mild unevenness in the planchet occurs at the 85 of the date which might be used as a pedigree marker. Pop 11; 18 finer.
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000.
The Dandelion Collection; earlier from our Sale 37, lot 1667.
