Lot 899

Roman Bronze Figural Finial Terminal, c. 2nd Century AD. Cast finial with a hollow, cylindrical barrel terminating in a caricature of a Syrian type, with added incised detail. Grotesque, with a malformed head, a pair of pop-eyes, nose bent severely to one side, tongue protruding to the other, mismatched ears, a knobby protrusion at the brow line and another protrusion resembling a ram's horn at the rear of the skull. He wears a tight-fitting garment with a "V" neck. Height: 5.35" (13 cm). Fine dark green patina, with some light earth adhering. Very rare and unusual.

Probably depicts a popular circus figure as consistant with Rome's facination with the grotesque.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 4,000.

Realized $1,800
