Lot 187

(Hawaii) Sterling Silver Place Holder With Coat of Arms. Sterling silver plate, 6 inches in diameter, with the enameled coat of arms of the Kingdom of Hawaii that was used during the reigns of King Kalakaua and Queen Liliuokalani at center and engraved with the initials "PTCC" at the top edge of the plate. This belonged to Percy Thomas Cleghorn, the great great nephew and personal secretary of Archibald Scott Cleghorn. Percy's grandson, the present owner, believes that this was a personalized place holder used at meals.

The Royal Coat of Arms of the Kingdom of Hawaii was adopted in 1845 during the reign of King Kamehameha III. In the shield's 1st and 4th quarters are red, white and blue stripes representing the eight inhabited Hawaiian islands. The 2nd and 3rd quarters have two emblems of taboo (pulo'ulo'u) on yellow. The inescutcheon has crossed spears and the triangular flag on green. Above the shield is the Crown of Hawaii. The figure at right represents Kamanawa holding a spear; at left is Kame'eiamoku holding a feather standard; the two men were twin brothers who were high chiefs and counselors to King Kamehameha I. The motto: "Ua mau ke ea o ka 'aina i ka pono" meaning "The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness" is on a banner below.

During the reign of King Kalakaua (1874-1891), a second crown was added to the top of the feathered cape background, which was changed to an ermine cape. The two figures were faced outwards and a cross placed under the motto. The Coat of Arms adorns the iron gates and fencing at the Hulihea Palace, the Royal Mausoleum and the Iolani Palace.
Estimated Value $500 - 1,000.
Descended through the Cleghorn family.
